fringe benefits

How do you define boho style? Sienna Miller? Rachel Bilson? Kate Hudson? And of course we can’t forget the Olsen twins, two of the original Bohemian princesses. But what exactly is it, and how can you dress that way?

Bohemian style can be characterized by flowing or loose fitting clothing, layers, scarves, boots, maxi dresses, India inspired prints, a gyspy vibe, fringe, or an assortment of eclectic looking jewelry, just to name a few. The beauty of it is that you can’t really put your finger on what it is that specifically defines boho, so anybody can put their own personal style to it and still look the part. I would say the easiest way to "bohemify" your look is to add a scarf to your outfit.

Since I'm a freak for slouchy things, I just love the trend.

menswear inspired

You've all seen her.
She walks swiftly by you, one hand with a cell phone to her ear, her other perfectly manicured hand holding a coffee, her coiffed hair clinging on for dear life, with a potent trail of perfume hurrying faithfully behind.
She's fascinating. You wonder what exactly it is that she does, how much money she really makes, and if she always looks that perfect.

This stereotype has inspired many a fashion collection. And why shouldn't it? This woman is sexy and confident, and gets what she wants. Modern fashion proves that the business professional look doesn't have to be boring. And one spin on that trend is menswear inspired, which I personally love. It's like you had to wear your boyfriend's clothes, but you sure know how to work it. And you've got everyone's attention.

miranda kerr

Miranda Kerr, Australian beauty and Victoria's Secret Angel, has a personal style that is effortless, charming and classic. She seems to favor black and white palettes, and usually keeps it pretty simple, but somehow always looks amazing. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. She is, after all, a supermodel.

This picture of her with boyfriend Orlando Bloom (below) was taken last week, and I love her outfit. I think a nice blazer like that has quickly made it's way to the top (or very near the top) of my must-haves for fall. And winter. It's just a classic.

Here's the look for more:

vintage

Seems like everyone loves vintage these days. Wear anything of your grandma's and it's cool. In fact, I recently visited my grandma and she lugged out a huge basket of old jewelry for me to look through and pick out stuff. I was like a kid in a candy shop! I selected lots of fabulous vintage costume jewelry, and was pleasantly surprised (and a little bit smug) when a couple weeks later I saw a necklace at Urban Outfitters that was almost exactly like one from my grandma! She's hip and probably doesn't even realize it. Anyway, since then I see that 'grandma' jewelry everywhere! So the point of the story is that you could probably save some money and just ask your grandma for some of her old jewelry. Or maybe even an old sweater.

That's why thrift and vintage stores are so cool. Target and plenty of other stores have special "vintage" clothing, but you will never find those one-of-a-kind pieces that you can be sure no one at the mall will be wearing. Having said that, I am going to still go ahead and post some cool vintage pieces from those more 'mainstream' stores, because there is some really cool stuff out there, thrift store or not :). Plus, no thrift store has a website.

And don't even get me started on the furniture. I'll have to save that for another time.
